Macarthur Foundation Nigeria, Abuja, West Africa

The John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation is a private, philanthropic organization based in the United States that makes grants to help improve the human condition around the globe.

The Foundation has been making grants in Nigeria since 1989 and opened an office there in 1994. Grants are made to strengthen the country’s universities, improve the sexual and reproductive health and rights of women and young people, and to advance human rights and international justice.

The MacArthur Foundation in Nigeria is one of four offices of the Foundation that are located outside of the United States. The others are in Mexico, India, and Russia.

Recognizing that MacArthur’s support is small compared to the needs of Nigeria and its people, the Foundation strives to encourage investment by other funders and to promote creative partnerships among those in the public, private and nonprofit sectors.
