HURILAWS started in 1997 as a specialist provider of human rights legal services and purveyor of skills in the legal aspects of transition management.

In particular, HURILAWS is the driver of the Multi-Sector Law Group (MSLG), which is a multi-disciplinary network of civil society actors and organizations for democratic change in Nigeria, chaired by Olisa Agbakoba, Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) and founder of HURILAWS. HURILAWS is able to draw on the skills of a wide range of specialists in law, public and economic policy, among its staff of sixteen people and associates.

Project Alert is a non-governmental women’s rights organisation set up to provide information on all forms of violence against women, and render support services to female victims of violence.


Project Alert is being established to play this critical role. Ideal as it may seem to affiliate Project Alert to one of the already existing women’s rights organisation, this will only succeed in further playing down the importance and seriousness of these issues. Mobility Aid and Appliances Research and Development Centre [MAARDEC] was founded in 1991, and was officially commissioned by the then President of Nigeria, General Ibrahim Badamosi Babangida in 1992.

MAARDEC is a child of necessity conceived by the ingenuity of its founder, Cosmas Ikechukwu Blaise Okoli, a Nigerian with disability who has the zeal for empowering people with disabilities so that they can enjoy normal dignified lives.


The organization is registered by guarantee [RC 245710] and was established primarily to research, develop and produce mobility aids and appliances for sales to persons with disability at subsidized rates and outright donations in some cases; these decisions were born out of the realization that Nigerians with disabilities constitute the poorest of the poor in our society most of whom cannot afford the most rudimentary aids and appliances to leave home to find means of livelihood.
